The Route Atlas charter

Every RouteExplorer outing begins with a charter conversation. We sit down with your group — whether two guests or twelve — and map out how you want to move through Greater Victoria and the surrounding island. Our atlas is not a generic brochure; it is a living set of waypoints, pacing notes and seasonal adjustments drawn from years of walking Wharf Street, tracing Dallas Road and crossing the Malahat toward Cowichan Valley viewpoints.

The charter process asks three questions: how much ground do you want to cover, what pace feels comfortable, and which themes matter most — architecture, shoreline ecology, food stops, or hidden staircases linking downtown to the water. From that brief we assemble a route dossier you keep on your phone or in print. Guides reference the same document, so everyone shares one narrative thread from the first step at the Inner Harbour to the final lookout.

We operate exclusively within British Columbia's south island region. That focus lets us refine timings down to the minute — knowing when the Causeway clears after a cruise ship, when Fan Tan Alley is quiet enough for a slow wander, and which pullouts on the Saanich Peninsula offer unobstructed views of the Olympic Mountains. The atlas grows each season as our team logs new segments, revised parking notes and accessibility observations.

Four route chapters across the capital region

Our harbour city unfolds in distinct chapters — each a horizontal band of geography, history and rhythm. Browse the bands below to see how a full day might unfold.

01

Inner Harbour circuit

The Parliament precinct, Causeway promenade and Empress lawn form the opening chapter. Guides trace Confederation-era decisions etched in stone while you absorb salt air from the float-plane dock. Typical duration: three hours on foot with optional legislature courtyard pause.

02

Old Town & Chinatown lanes

Johnson Street bridge to Fan Tan Alley carries you through brick warehouses, mural alleys and the oldest Chinatown in Canada. Food stops are woven in — bakeries, tea merchants and noodle counters selected for consistency rather than hype.

03

Dallas Road shoreline

From Beacon Hill Park meadows to Holland Point, this coastal band follows the Salish Sea edge. Tide charts inform the briefing; low tide reveals sandstone shelves and kelp forests that high tide hides entirely. Wind layers recommended year-round.

04

Peninsula & garden drives

North toward Butchart Gardens or east to Cordova Bay, this chapter suits groups preferring wheels to walking boots. Drivers follow our marked itinerary; guides narrate from the passenger seat and coordinate timed entries at destination gardens.

Questions before you set out

A quick selection from our full FAQ. Expand any item for detail.

RouteExplorer is a Victoria-based route planning and guided excursion service. We design walking itineraries, coastal drives and island day routes, then lead your group along them with licensed guides. We are not a booking agency for flights or accommodation — we focus entirely on how you move through the capital region once you arrive.

Most walking routes operate from March through October. Winter months feature shortened harbour circuits and indoor heritage segments. Coastal drives and garden programmes follow seasonal opening hours of partner venues.

Two weeks is ideal for standard programmes. Peak summer weekends — especially July and August — fill quickly; contact us four weeks ahead if your dates are fixed. Last-minute requests are accommodated when guide availability permits.
